Patagonia’s R1 Air is the next generation of warm, breathable midlayers, ideally suited for moving fast and travelling light. Air permeable yet phenomenally warm, the R1 Air series is the ideal layering piece for year-round use. Use over a baselayer for spring mornings, layer with a windshell in the autumn, and wear under a hardshell in the winter – the R1 Air handles it all.

Our Verdict

Constructed from Patagonia’s hollow-core fabric in a new zig-zag pattern, the R1 Air is a warmer, more breathable iteration of the venerable R1 fleece. The R1 Air excels in high-intensity use, as it breathes far more efficiently than the standard R1 and wicks sweat with ease. The flipside of this is that the R1 Air is vulnerable to windchill, and I would strongly recommend combing it with a lightweight windshell on blustery days to make the most of the warmth provided by the fleece.

The soft recycled polyester face fabric has proven to be far more durable than initially expected – it’s been used and abused on adentures in the Lakes and Snowdonia, and despite days under a pack and weeks on the trail, the Air maintains its soft, comfortable warmth. This is an excellent midlayer for use on chilly mornings and it’s a reliable piece for cold evenings. Due to the nature of the weave, the fit is slimmer than you might expect – a size up might be needed over your usual Patagonia size.
